Welcome to the Geology Merit Badge home page. This page is NOT affiliated or officially sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America. However, it is maintained by a member of the committee that wrote the current requirements and merit badge pamphlet. The committee has taught the Geology Merit Badge at the last 5 Jamborees. The Geology Merit Badge began in 1911 as a Mining badge. After changing to Rocks and Minerals, the Geology Merit Badge was created in 1953. (https://aoghs.org/energy-education-resources/geology-merit-badge/) Since 1953 747,259 Geology Merit Badges have been earned. After averaging about 17,000 each year for the last few years only 7,484 were earned in 2020, probably due to restrictions in summer camp and other activities caused by COVID-19. This website is not only dedicated to the Geology Merit Badge. We intend to include geologic information about several of the BSA camps and reservations. A United States Geological Survey paper on Philmont is included in the Resources page. A study of the geology of the Bechtel Summit Scout Reservation in West Virginia is in the works. This site is under construction. Please bear with us. Thank you! This website is not affiliated or officially sponsored by the Boys Scouts of America.
